Command Sergeant Major Duane A. Fredrickson was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He entered the military on the 26th of October 1966 when he joined the United States Coast Guard and completed four years of active duty service on the 28 October 1970 and two years of reserve service on 28th of October 1972.
After a 5 year break in service he joined the United States Army Reserve on the 18th of October 1978. He completed Military Police Basic and Advanced training for MOS (95B/31B).
